Second phase of bridge maintenance on I-270 & US 36 bridge over I-25 in Adams County begins Sept. 10

Sept. 8, 2026 - Denver Metro/Central Colorado - Lane closures will change as improvements to bridge infrastructure progress

Adams County — The second and final phase of preventative maintenance of the Interstate 270 and US Highway 36 bridge over I-25 is set to begin early September as crews continue improvements designed to extend the bridge’s service life.

The Colorado Department of Transportation began work on the I-270 & US 36 bridge over I-25, and the southbound I-25 off-ramp to eastbound I-270 in March 2026. Crews have successfully completed the first phase of the project, which focused on ground stabilization and replacing key bridge components to extend the structure's lifespan.

As the project moves into Phase 2, the traffic pattern will shift. The existing right lane closure on eastbound US 36 will move to the left lane as drivers approach the interchange. Additionally, crews will implement a new right lane closure on eastbound I-270 between I-25 and Washington Street.

Beginning Sept. 10, crews will continue ground improvements throughout the remaining portions of the work zone. These improvements will strengthen the subgrade beneath the existing roadway and bridge embankments, helping prevent settlement and soil-related issues for years to come. Crews will also continue work on the southbound I-25 off-ramp to eastbound I-270 at MP 217.

Additional activities during this phase include reconstructing roadway and bridge structures. This work includes sawcutting, removing and disposing of deteriorated bridge deck and approach slab concrete, and installing protection for bridge inlets.

Traffic Impacts

  • Traffic will be shifted to one lane on eastbound US 36 starting at MP 57 with a left lane closure
  • Traffic will be shifted to one lane on eastbound I-270 between I-25 and Washington Street with a right lane closure
  • Single lane closures will be in place on the southbound I-25 off-ramp to eastbound I-270
  • A minimum of one lane of traffic will remain open throughout the project
  • Nighttime work hours are 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday
  • Daytime work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, continuing through October 2026
  • Motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution as the travel lanes will be narrowed and crews with heavy equipment will be working in the area
  • Minor traffic delays are expected

  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
