Safety improvements complete on CO 12 near Weston
Travel Advisory
Las Animas County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, United Companies, completed the safety improvement project along Colorado Highway 12 west of Weston. Work began April 13 and was completed at the end of September.
Safety improvements took place along CO 12 west of Weston from Mile Point 46.7 to MP 48. Work included a 16’ widening and full-depth reclamation and reconstruction of the highway. All layers of the roadway were pulverized and reused in new hot mix asphalt paving. Other aspects of the project included 4’ shoulder widening and the construction of a 12’ eastbound passing lane. Crews also performed culvert repairs, new pavement markings and signing.
“The Highway of Legends is a scenic and historic route known for its breathtaking views, rich history and outdoor experiences between Trinidad and La Veta,” said Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “With the completion of these passing lanes, motorists now have additional opportunities to safely pass slower-moving traffic, improving mobility and enhancing the driving experience along this important corridor.”
The newly widened corridor enables safer passing of slower-moving vehicles, while the fresh asphalt surface substantially extends the highway's lifespan, delivers a smoother ride and offers enhanced resistance to rutting and roadway damage.
