Resurfacing of US 160 west of Walsenburg

Sept. 24, 2026 - Southeastern Colorado - Completed work provides a smoother, safer road surface for motorists

Huerfano County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, United Companies, completed the resurfacing of US Highway 160 from Colorado Highway 12 to Walsenburg. Work began April 6 and was completed late September.

“Our work on US Highway 160 is part of a sustained effort to enhance rural highways for local residents and visitors,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “Statewide, CDOT has improved more than 2,500 miles of rural pavement since 2021, with 10-Year Plan funding supporting 756 miles across 41 projects to deliver vital upgrades where they are needed most.”

“US 160 between CO 12 and Walsenburg is an important corridor for southern Colorado, providing access to local communities and connecting travelers to Interstate 25,” said Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “The completion of this project delivers a smoother, safer road surface for motorists and represents an important investment in the long-term safety and reliability of this critical corridor.”

The project improved approximately 11 miles along US 160 west of Walsenburg from Mile Point 294.4, near US 160/CO Highway 12 intersection, to MP 305.4, near Main Street in Walsenburg. Roadway work included milling old asphalt, paving with new asphalt, bridge deck repairs, road sign replacement, updated pavement marking and striping.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
