Colorado Boulevard & Hampden Avenue Reconstruction

Project completed

Project Overview

On Monday, May 13, 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) began reconstructing and repaving the intersection of Colorado Boulevard (CO 2) and Hampden Avenue (US 285). Work will consist of replacement of the current asphalt pavement with a more durable, concrete intersection that is expected to last three times as long as the current surface.

In addition, the project features new median islands that are designed for better pedestrian safety and ADA compliance. Added safety enhancements include upgraded traffic signals, color-coded concrete to improve visibility of the crosswalks, and fewer lanes for pedestrians to navigate in order to continue along the Highline Canal Trail. Drainage improvements are planned, along with installation of new storm water pipes and inlets.

Chato’s Concrete Co. of Denver is the contractor for this $1.3 million project.

Project Schedule and Upcoming Closures

On July 7, 2013, CDOT will begin a 24 hour operation at the intersection for approximately 20 days in order to complete the majority of the reconstruction work. By working around the clock over a short duration, CDOT has been able to reduce the reconstruction work from three months to 20 days. During the 20-day period, some traffic movements will be restricted, major delays are expected and alternate routes are strongly advised.

Traffic Movements During 20-Day Operation

During the 20-day reconstruction of the intersection, traffic operations and movements will be limited in most cases to these areas:

  • Eastbound and westbound Hampden will be provided two through lanes during the reconstruction work. Left turns from Hampden will be prohibited.
  • Northbound and southbound Colorado Boulevard right turns will be allowed during each phase of construction.
  • While these turn movements will be allowed during most of the work, motorists can expect that they will be restricted for a period of up to five days during the work.

High Line Canal Trail

Access to the High Line Canal Trail will be maintained. During some phases of the construction, when direct access to the trail is impacted, temporary free shuttle service will be provided to trail users by the contractor.
