CO 257 Resurfacing
US 34 Business to Walnut Street

Project Newsletter - July 17, 2023

Garden Drive at CO 257 closed July 19 and 21

Garden Drive will be closed at Colorado Highway 257 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19 and Friday, July 21 to allow for full reconstruction of the intersection. Garden Drive will be open on Thursday, July 20 on a temporary gravel surface. Drivers should plan ahead and seek alternate routes. Access to businesses and adjacent properties will be maintained. Any changes to the closure schedule will be posted on message boards and on the CO 257 Resurfacing project web page.

Two signed detour routes currently in place for the CO 257 full closure are also applicable for the Garden Drive closure.
  • West of CO 257: The detour directs drivers around the west side of the closure using Crossroads Boulevard, 7th Street and 1st Street.
  • East of CO 257: The detour directs drivers around the east side of the closure using Eastman Park Drive, County Road 23 and CO 392.

CO 257 in Windsor closed through Aug. 4

CO 257 from north of Walnut Street to south of Eastman Park Drive is closed for major road reconstruction. CDOT is completing as much work as possible before school resumes in August. Approximately one mile of CO 257 is closed to all traffic through Aug. 4.

The following streets do not have access to or across CO 257 during the closure: Walnut Street, Chestnut Street, Commons Drive, and Eastman Park Drive. Garden Drive will remain open to through traffic only except for periodic short closures to reconstruct the intersection as described above. Significant travel delays are expected. Drivers should plan ahead and seek alternate routes. Access to businesses and adjacent properties will be maintained.

This full closure saves several weeks of one-lane alternating traffic conditions and partial intersection closures. Any changes to the closure schedule will be posted on message boards and on the CO 257 Resurfacing project web page

The Colorado Department of Transportation has coordinated closing CO 257 with the Town of Windsor. During the full closure, Windsor is accelerating parts of the CO 257 / Eastman Park Drive intersection project.

Project Overview

The Colorado Department of Transportation and Coulson Excavating Company are improving nearly five miles of Colorado Highway 257 between US 34 Business (Mile Point 5.6) in Greeley and Walnut Street (MP 10.4) in Windsor this year. Drivers will pass through at least two work zones and should prepare for periodic traffic delays on CO 257.

This project resurfaces CO 257 to provide a smoother driving surface and increase the longevity of the highway. Intersection improvements at Crossroads Boulevard will enhance mobility by adding a second eastbound left turn lane to northbound CO 257. Safety improvements include installing new guardrail, roadside delineators, and rumble strips.

CO 257 was identified as a priority corridor for CDOT’s Surface Treatment Program. Funding from the program will improve drivability and highway safety on CO 257. Coulson Excavating Company was awarded the contract to construct the improvements.

Traffic Impacts

Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes, use extra caution in the work zones, and follow all signs and markings.

Other traffic impacts include:
  • 20-day closure of CO 257 in the fall for bridge repairs at MP 7.6, which is approximately two miles north of US 34 Business
  • Various lane and shoulder closures within the project limits
  • Periodic single-lane operations with flaggers alternating traffic
  • Frequent traffic shifts and traffic pattern changes
  • Trucks entering and exiting various work zones
  • Temporary concrete barrier wall to separate the work zone from adjacent travel lanes at several locations
  • Work zone speed limit reduction may be in place
  • Traffic fines will be doubled in the work zone
Weekly traffic impacts information is available on the CO 257 Resurfacing project web page.
