CO 257 Resurfacing
US 34 Business to Walnut Street

Project Newsletter - Sept. 1, 2023

Reminder: CO 257 north of 10th Street will close for three weeks starting Sept. 5

CO 257 from north of 10th Street (U.S. Highway 34 Business) to south of Crossroads Boulevard will close for 20 days for major bridge repairs over a drainage south of Crossroads Boulevard. From 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5 through 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 25, approximately two miles of CO 257 between the Town of Windsor and the City of Greeley will close to through traffic.

Significant travel delays are expected. Drivers should plan ahead and seek alternate routes. Access to businesses and adjacent properties will be maintained from either side of the bridge (Mile Point 7.6), which is less than a half-mile south of Crossroads Boulevard.

Two signed detour routes will be in place.
  • The local detour will direct drivers around the west side of the closure using US 34, County Road 17 and Crossroads Boulevard.
  • Revised: Through commercial truck traffic must use either US 34 Business (10th Street), 59th Avenue and CO 392 to the east or US 34, CR 17, Crossroads Boulevard, and Colorado Boulevard to the west due to size and weight restrictions on local roads.
Crews will work extended hours and perform some activities over the weekend to complete this work as quickly as possible. Planned work includes extensive repairs to the bridge supports and deck, replacing bridge railing and paving the bridge. Vehicle traffic must stay off the bridge while work is performed. During the closure, crews will also resurface the highway.

Any changes to the closure schedule will be posted on message boards, cotrip.org and on the project web page.

Coordination with the Town of Windsor

The Colorado Department of Transportation has coordinated closing CO 257 with the Town of Windsor. For more information on the Town's construction activities near Eastman Park Drive, visit the CO 257 / Eastman Park Drive intersection project web page.

Project Overview

The Colorado Department of Transportation and Coulson Excavating Company are improving nearly five miles of CO 257 between US 34 Business (Mile Point 5.6) in Greeley and Walnut Street (MP 10.4) in Windsor this year.

This project resurfaces CO 257 to provide a smoother driving surface and increase the longevity of the highway. Intersection improvements at Crossroads Boulevard will enhance mobility by adding a second eastbound left turn lane to northbound CO 257. Safety improvements include installing new guardrail, roadside delineators, and rumble strips.

CO 257 was identified as a priority corridor for CDOT’s Surface Treatment Program. Funding from the program will improve drivability and highway safety on CO 257. Coulson Excavating Company was awarded the contract to construct the improvements.

Traffic Impacts

Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes, use extra caution in the work zones, and follow all signs and markings.

Other traffic impacts include:
  • Various lane and shoulder closures within the project limits
  • Periodic single-lane operations with flaggers alternating traffic
  • Frequent traffic shifts and traffic pattern changes
  • Trucks entering and exiting various work zones
  • Temporary concrete barrier wall to separate the work zone from adjacent travel lanes at several locations
  • Work zone speed limit reduction may be in place
  • Traffic fines will be doubled in the work zone
Weekly traffic impacts information is available on the CO 257 Resurfacing project web page.
