Toll Rates/Violations

All tolls are collected by electronic toll collection. This means no stopping, no tollbooth congestion and no change is needed. Simply drive under the electronic toll reader and the toll is deducted automatically from an active ExpressToll account.

License Plate Toll was introduced in 2009 as another option to pay a toll. For those vehicles without an ExpressToll account and pass, cameras will photograph the front and rear license plates, and a bill will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. It's important to note that License Plate Toll customers will be billed at a higher rate.

To use any of the Colorado Express Lanes, you will need an ExpressToll account and pass. An ExpressToll customer service representative can help you decide which pass is best for you, based on your particular needs. For example, the Switchable HOV Transponder is the only pass that allows you to choose the HOV option and use the lanes for free, but if you typically drive alone, you can use a sticker tag or standard pass.

Remember: If you choose not to use the pass, you will be billed through a License Plate Toll. A bill will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle and you will pay a higher toll rate based on how far you travel in the Express Lane.

The ExpressToll passes are fully compatipable with all CDOT Express Lanes, including the US 36 Express Lanes, Central and North I-25 Express Lanes, and the I-70 Mountain Express Lane.

Carpools with three or more people in the car using HOV Express Lanes with a Switchable HOV Transponder are not charged a toll. An ExpressToll customer service representative can help you decide which pass is best for you, based on your particular needs.

It's easy to obtain an ExpressToll pass:

  1. You can get a pass and create an active account by visiting expresstoll.com, or by calling ExpressToll Customer Service locally at 303-537-3470, or toll free at 1-888-946-3470.
  2. See a list of retail establishments where you can sign up directly.

Toll prices change based upon the time of day and level of traffic congestion. The varying toll rate manages traffic so the Express Lanes provide a reliable travel time. Electronic message signs and other static signs clearly display the current toll rate prior to entrance points.

Below is a toll schedule for the Central I-25 Express Lanes. Vehicles with four or more axles have to pay the $25 fee in addition to the base toll rate. This toll schedule could change, if it is found to be insufficient at providing reliable travel times for drivers in the Express Lanes. Those who do not have an ExpressToll account and pass will be charged a surcharge to the established toll of about 25 percent or more.

Please note that the Central I-25 Express Lanes are closed for maintenance from 3-5 a.m. and from 11 a.m.- noon each weekday, and are open for northbound travel on weekends.

Toll rates vary by time of day and are posted on the overhead message signs prior to the Express Lanes entrance, so drivers know exactly how much they will pay in tolls. However, it's important to note that a vehicle is charged a toll when it crosses the toll collection point at 58th Avenue, not when it enters the facility. The toll rate at the time when a vehicle passes through the toll collection point is the amount the vehicle will be charged.
