CO 196 Culvert Rehabilitation in Bent County

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin a culvert rehabilitation project at three locations in southeastern Colorado as part of its statewide effort to rehabilitate culverts in need of repair. The work is scheduled to take place over two months, from Wednesday, Feb. 5 through Friday, March 13. Contractor, America West Construction, LLC., has been hired to perform the work for this $368K project.

The three project locations include:

• Bent County Site 1 –CO Highway 196 and County Road 32 at mile point (MP) 3.92
• Bent County Site 2 - CO Highway 196 at County Road 35 MP 6.80
• Bent County Site 3 - CO Highway 196 and County Road 36 at MP 7.90
• Work will be occurring at multiple locations simultaneously.

The culverts will be rehabilitated by use of spin casting, which uses centrifugal force to uniformly line the inside of each pipe with a high strength mortar. This method of rehabilitation eliminates the need to dig up the road in order to replace the culvert, thus reducing the cost and impact to the traveling public.
The goal of the project is to increase the longevity of each pipe without removing and replacing the existing pipe and to prevent failing and erosion of the embankment, and ensuring the safety of the travelling public.
