Colorado Highway 115 Improvements

September 5, 2023 Update

Rock Creek bridge girders will be installed overnight on Sept. 6

The west half of the Colorado Highway 115 bridge over Rock Creek bridge is under construction. Setting bridge girders is the next major milestone.

From 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6 to 6 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, CO 115 will be reduced to a single-lane configuration with flaggers alternating traffic between Rock Creek Canyon Road/Wilderness Road and Old Canon City Road for bridge girder installation over Rock Creek.

The concrete girders will be delivered on Wednesday and placed by crane overnight. The lane closure is necessary to stage equipment and maintain a safe distance between vehicle traffic and the crane operation.

CO 115 weekend single-lane alternating traffic continues in September

CO 115 will be reduced to a single-lane configuration with flaggers and a pilot vehicle alternating northbound and southbound traffic continuously from 7 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Monday for the next three weekends. This configuration is necessary to pave narrow sections of the highway from Hitch Rack Ranch Road to south of Roca Roja Circle. The length of each single-lane operation will be less than one mile. Drivers should expect delays (up to 15 minutes) and be prepared to stop for flaggers.

Paving operations are weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change. Any changes to the weekend work schedule will be displayed on message boards along the corridor.

Traffic Impacts & Schedule

Drivers should expect temporary driving surfaces and frequent traffic pattern changes through fall. Care will be taken to maintain access to adjacent properties. However, drivers should be aware that construction equipment may infrequently block side-streets and driveways for up to 15 minutes during grading and paving operations.

Other traffic impacts include:
  • CO 115 is in two lane configuration (one lane in each direction) for the entire project length from two miles south of Barrett Road (MP 27.7) to Rock Creek Canyon Road/Wilderness Road (MP 39)
  • A reduced work zone speed limit of 45 mph is strictly enforced for the entire project work zone (12 miles)
  • An oversize vehicle width restriction of 11 feet is in place

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation is constructing a major improvement project on CO 115 between Colorado Springs and Penrose. This project improves road and bridge safety on CO 115 from MP 27.7 to MP 39 by adding passing lanes, right turn lanes, reconstructing Rock Creek bridge, and performing major rehabilitation or reconstruction of cracked and distressed pavement.
The project limits are between mile points 27.7 and 39 on CO 115 in El Paso County
The project limits are between MP 27.7 and 39 on CO 115 in El Paso County
