Colorado Highway 115 Improvements

June 21, 2023 Update

CO 115 single-lane alternating traffic planned this weekend

Colorado Highway 115 will be reduced to a single-lane configuration with flaggers and a pilot vehicle alternating northbound and southbound traffic continuously from 7 p.m. on Friday, June 23 to 6 a.m. on Monday, June 26 between mile points 32.5 and MP 33. This configuration is necessary to pave a narrow section of the highway approximately 1/2 mile north of Turkey Canyon Ranch Road. The length of the single-lane operation is less than one mile. Drivers should expect delays (up to 15 minutes) and be prepared to stop for flaggers.

Paving operations are weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change. Any changes to the weekend work schedule will be displayed on message boards along the corridor.

CO 115 traffic will shift onto new concrete as early as next week

Over three miles of CO 115 between MP 35.5 and 39 will soon move onto new concrete pavement at the north end of the work zone. This traffic switch may occur in sections over the course of several days.

Before switching traffic, temporary pavement will be placed to connect driveways and side streets on the west side of the highway to the new concrete on the east.

Traffic Impacts & Schedule

In general, crews are working during daylight hours Monday through Friday. However, the contractor will periodically work overnight or through the weekend to construct several narrow sections of CO 115. Night and weekend work will expedite construction and reduce traffic impacts during weekdays. Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

Drivers should expect temporary driving surfaces and frequent traffic pattern changes through fall. Care will be taken to maintain access to adjacent properties. However, drivers should be aware that construction equipment may infrequently block side-streets and driveways for up to 15 minutes during grading and paving operations.

Other traffic impacts include:
  • CO 115 is in two lane configuration (one lane in each direction) for the entire project length from two miles south of Barrett Road (MP 27.7) to Rock Creek Canyon Road/Wilderness Road (MP 39)
  • A reduced work zone speed limit of 45 mph is strictly enforced for the entire project work zone (12 miles)
  • An oversize vehicle width restriction of 11 feet is in place

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation is constructing a major improvement project on CO 115 between Colorado Springs and Penrose. This project improves road and bridge safety on CO 115 from MP 27.7 to MP 39 by adding passing lanes, right turn lanes, reconstructing Rock Creek bridge, and performing major rehabilitation or reconstruction of cracked and distressed pavement.
The project limits are between mile points 27.7 and 39 on CO 115 in El Paso County
