Colorado Highway 115 Improvements

May 17, 2023 Update

Single-lane alternating traffic planned on CO 115 from May 19 to May 22

Colorado Highway 115 will be reduced to a single-lane configuration with flaggers and a pilot vehicle alternating northbound and southbound traffic continuously from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 19 to 6 a.m. on Monday, May 22 between mile points 28 and 29 south of Barrett Road. This configuration is necessary to pave a narrow section of the highway. The length of the single-lane operation is less than one mile. Drivers should expect delays and be prepared to stop for flaggers.

This work was originally planned last weekend. Site conditions and weather conditions delayed the work. Paving operations are weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change. Any changes to the weekend work schedule will be displayed on message boards along the corridor.
The project consists of two major work areas. Asphalt resurfacing is underway between mile points 27.7 and 35.5. Concrete paving is underway between mile points 35.5 and 39.

Concrete pavement work near Old Canon City Road

Concrete correction work is underway on CO 115 near Old Canon City Road. This area did not meet project specifications and will be replaced at no cost to CDOT. Specifically, corrections to the roadway alignment due to a surveying discrepancy are being addressed. The impacted area is approximately 10-percent of the 3.2 miles recently paved. Removal work will be complete this week and concrete paving will occur next week, pending weather.

Traffic Impacts & Schedule

In general, crews are working during daylight hours Monday through Friday. However, the contractor will periodically work overnight or through the weekend to construct several narrow sections of CO 115. Night and weekend work will expedite construction and reduce traffic impacts during weekdays. After this weekend, nine additional weekends may require a single-lane configuration with alternating traffic at different points along the 12-mile work zone.

Drivers should expect temporary driving surfaces and frequent traffic pattern changes through fall. Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

Other traffic impacts include:
  • CO 115 is in two lane configuration (one lane in each direction) for the entire project length from two miles south of Barrett Road (MP 27.7) to Rock Creek Canyon Road/Wilderness Road (MP 39)
  • A reduced work zone speed limit of 45 mph is strictly enforced for the entire project work zone (12 miles)
  • An oversize vehicle width restriction of 11 feet is in place

Wildlife fencing added to the project near Rock Creek

In response to vehicle-wildlife collisions along CO 115, CDOT intends to add wildlife mitigation elements at the north end of the project. CDOT received wildlife mitigation funding from Senate Bill 22-151 to install over ½-mile of wildlife fencing on both sides of CO 115, from Old Canon City Road (Mile Point 38.3) to just south of Rock Creek Canyon Road / Wilderness Road (MP 38.9). The new bridge under construction over Rock Creek will serve as a wildlife underpass, and the fence will funnel wildlife to the protected crossing. Materials will be temporarily stored adjacent to the highway. More information will follow as plans solidify.

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation is constructing a major improvement project on CO 115 between Colorado Springs and Penrose. This project improves road and bridge safety on CO 115 from MP 27.7 to MP 39 by adding passing lanes, right turn lanes, reconstructing Rock Creek bridge, and performing major rehabilitation or reconstruction of cracked and distressed pavement.
The project limits are between mile points 27.7 and 39 on CO 115 in El Paso County
