CO 71 Bridge Replacement in Rocky Ford

Project Facts

  • Cost: Funded with state of Colorado FASTER Bridge Funding
  • Contractor(s): Lobato Construction, LLC
  • Location: CO 71 outside Rocky Ford
  • Timeline: December 2018 - fall 2019

Crews on this project are replacing an 85-year-old bridge that will better accommodate travel with 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders.

Crews have completed about 75 percent of the bridge demolition work and have begun building the bridge's new substructure.

During this work, travelers can expect a closure. Meanwhile, crews have built a new bridge section by section off-site. They will transport each element of the structure to the project site and construct it there.

Travel Impacts

  • The Arkansas River will be temporarily diverted as crews pour concrete, and move 1,300 tons of dirt and 445,000 pounds of steel from the site.
  • Through late October 2019, CO 71 is closed from mile point (MP) 18.75 to MP 19.5.
      • CDOT advises travelers to take a detour that uses a combination of highways, including US 50, CO 207 and CO 96 (see map below). This route has been approved by CDOT for hazardous materials transport.
