Replacement of Variable Message Signs & Cameras

About the Project:

This project will upgrade Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), including overhead Variable Message Signs (VMS) and Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) from mile point 213.11 to mile point 216.18 in and directly around the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel. These tools are used for monitoring traffic flow and incidents, displaying information for travelers, and making the tunnel as efficient and safe as possible

Project Benefits

This project will be upgrading the cameras and signs in the tunnel for traffic operators' use to monitor the safety and health of the traveling public. These devices are used 24/7 to monitor the tunnel and to alert the traveling public of any delays or incidents on this critical route.

Work Schedule:

Work will take place overnight Sunday through Thursday nights between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Traffic Impacts:

Starting overnight on Sunday July 9, this work will require overnight FULL closures of one bore/direction of the Eisenhower Tunnel Sunday-Thursday nights between 10pm and 5am. Only one tunnel bore will be closed at a time. Travel will continue for both directions through the open bore with traffic stops and alternating traffic. Travelers can anticipate 20 minute delays. This schedule is anticipated to last through summer 2024. Overnight full bore closures will not occur on weekends and holidays.
