CO 72 Coal Creek Canyon

Week of July 12

  • On July 6, a new 24/7 automated signal was activated at MP 24 which is under a temporary single lane configuration during embankment and paving work. This signal will be in operation for approximately one month.
  • Two automated signals are in place at MP 15 and MP 16.4, respectively to manage 24/7 alternating east/westbound traffic while culverts are being replaced.
  • Temporary closures during daytime hours Monday to Saturday are also in place between MP 17 and MP 19 and at MP 24 for erosion control and shoulder widening. These closures are managed by flagger operations.
  • Full bicycle restrictions are in place in the work zone. No bicycles are permitted on the full 12-mile stretch of CO 72 between Plainview Road and Pinecliffe.

Project Facts

  • Cost: $9.55 million (construction)
  • Contractor: M.A. Mortenson
  • Timeline: Spring 2019 to Fall 2020
  • Location: Along 12 miles of CO 72 between Plainview Road (mile point 12.3) and Pinecliffe (MP 24.6) in Coal Creek Canyon

CDOT and contractor M.A. Mortenson have begun the final stage of a federally-funded permanent flood repair project along a 12-mile section of CO 72 that sustained heavy damage during the floods of 2013. Over the next several months, crews will be replacing two additional culverts to accommodate large storm events, adding a 4-foot shoulder from Plainview Road to Crescent Park, and making roadway and safety improvements along the corridor. The project began in April 2019 with the construction of three culverts and major drainage improvements. Work is expected to be fully complete by fall 2020.

Schedule & Travel Impacts

Working hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday with some weekend work expected. All construction schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.
Starting on Wednesday, April 1, the following closures and restrictions will be in effect:
  • Two 24/7 temporary traffic signals will operate near MP 15 and 16.4 to direct alternating traffic through the two box culvert replacement work zones
  • 20-minute traffic delays are possible through fall 2020
  • Speeds are reduced and fines are doubled
  • Bike restrictions are in place from MP 12.3 to MP 24.6
  • All closures, restrictions and travel impacts are posted to
CDOT permits the contractor to work up to four one-lane road sections at a time as long as total traffic delays through the corridor do not exceed 20 minutes. CDOT will monitor traffic delays and conditions to help prevent excessive wait times. The contractor has implemented communication measures between each work zone traffic control team to address total delay times through the corridor. We encourage drivers to plan ahead and be prepared for 20 minute delays through fall 2020.
Bicycle traffic is prohibited in both directions of CO 72 through the entire work zone.Travel restrictions are necessary between Plainview Road (MP 12.3), which is approximately 1.7 miles west of CO 93 in Jefferson County, and the community of Pinecliffe (MP 24.6) in Boulder and Gilpin Counties. CDOT will reevaluate these restrictions as work is completed in different sections of the corridor.

General Project Information

This section of CO 72 provides access from the west side of the Denver metro area through Coal Creek Canyon to Nederland. A 12-mile stretch of this mountainous highway sustained major damage from the floods of 2013. While emergency work repaired damages to make the roadway passable, permanent drainage and roadway improvements included in this project will help mitigate future flood damage. Specific work includes:

  • Replacing culverts to accommodate large storm events
  • Stabilizing slopes and restoring channels
  • Adding a 4-foot shoulder along westbound CO 72 from Plainview Road to Crescent Park, and
  • Re-establishing native grasses and erosion control to slopes that were disturbed during emergency work.
