Critical Bridges
Summary
The I-270 corridor includes 19 existing structures, which over the past 10 years have required 160 planned maintenance activities and 65 emergency maintenance repairs, often during peak travel hours. Eight of these bridges, known as the Critical Bridges, have exceeded their design life. These bridges are located on the west end of the I-270 corridor between Vasquez Boulevard and York Street and include the eastbound and westbound I-270 bridges over the South Platte River, Burlington Ditch, Brighton Boulevard, Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway, and the 60th Avenue and BNSF Railway. Replacement of these bridges will begin in spring 2027 during Phase 1 of the project.
In Phase 2 of the project, four additional bridges will be rebuilt. These bridges are located on eastbound and westbound I-270 at 56th Avenue, York Street, and Vasquez Boulevard over Sand Creek.
