I-70 over 32nd Avenue Bridge Replacement

Work this Week
June 28 - July 2, 2022

***Special Upcoming Travel Alert - June 28 - 30***

This week, crews will be placing girders and performing other safety critical work on the new westbound I-70 bridge structure. This work will be performed during overnight hours to minimize impacts to the traveling public.

Motorists can expect:

  • 32nd Avenue will be fully closed under the bridges at I-70/Exit 264/32nd Avenue during overnight hours (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.) from Tuesday, June 28 to Thursday, June 30 during girder placement and other safety critical work.
  • The following overnight lane closures will also be in place in both directions of I-70 from June 28 to June 30 during this work:
    • On westbound I-70, left lane closures will exist from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday to Thursday.
    • On eastbound I-70, double left lane closures will be in place from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday to Thursday. One lane of travel will be maintained on I-70 during this overnight work.
  • After July 5, intermittent full overnight closures of 32nd Avenue and various overnight lane closures of both directions of I-70 within the work zone will be in place Mondays to Thursdays until mid-July.
  • All vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians will be detoured to W. 40th Avenue to bypass these overnight closures. This is necessary for safety reasons. Signage and construction devices will be in place.

CDOT and Kraemer North America appreciate your understanding during these temporary closures and associated noise and bright lights.

About the Project:

This project includes upgrading infrastructure at I-70 over 32nd Avenue by replacing the bridges and making safety improvements to support increased traffic on the I-70 corridor.

Work includes removal and replacement of both the eastbound and westbound bridges. Built in 1968 when this portion of I-70 was being constructed, the bridges have undergone frequent maintenance and repair work but have now exceeded their 50-year lifespan, resulting in this replacement project.

The new bridges will have a 75-year lifespan which will lead to fewer maintenance visits and associated lane closures to conduct repairs. The new structures will also have wider shoulders for increased safety. Construction of the new shoulders will be accomplished by filling in the current gap between the westbound and eastbound bridges.

Finally, the bridge guardrail will be upgraded to meet current safety standards.

Work Schedule

  • This five-phase project began on February 14, 2022 and is expected to last until late fall 2023.
  • Phase I lasts until early spring 2022 and includes minor bridge demolition, asphalt removals and utility relocations.
  • Phase II to Phase IV include constructing the median portion of the new westbound I-70 bridge and installing detour pavement, removing and replacing both westbound and eastbound I-70 bridges, constructing permanent roadways, and finalizing bridge overlays.
  • Final asphalt overlay, striping and landscaping will be completed in Phase V.
  • Work will be performed during daytime hours Monday to Friday with some night and weekend work expected.

Traffic Impacts

  • Traffic shifts, narrowed lanes and reduced speeds are in place at the approaches to and at Exit 264 (Clear Creek Pkwy/Youngfield/32nd Avenue) along both directions of I-70 from Exit 263 (Colorado Mills Pkwy) to Exit 266 (Ward Road/CO 72).
  • Three lanes of traffic will be maintained during daytime hours, but the lanes are narrower due to the traffic shifts.
  • Overnight (non peak-travel hours) single or double lane closures in both directions of I-70 from Exit 263 to Exit 266 will exist until completion.
  • Both westbound and eastbound 32nd Avenue are under a single lane reduction configuration with occasional full closures until completion.
