US 50, US 550 & US 160 Chain Station Safety Upgrades

Work this Week

For the week of June 16th, the following traffic impacts will occur from 7am to 5pm: 

  • Monday, June 17th there will be north- and southbound shoulder closures on US550 at Ouray (mm 70) for striping operations.

  • Tuesday, June 18th, there will be north- and southbound shoulder closures on US50 Monarch Pass West (mm190) for snow gate installation.

  • Wednesday, June 19th, there will be north- and southbound shoulder closures on US50 Monarch Pass East (mm 209) for snow gate installation.

  • Thursday June 20th through Friday June 21st, there will be north and southbound shoulder closures on US 160 Wolf Creek Pass (mm 176.6) for snow gate installation.

  • Location: At eight chain-up/chain-down locations off US Highways 50, 550 and 160 in Chaffee, Mineral, Ouray, Saguache and San Juan counties

In August 2018, crews began upgrading eight trucking chain-up/chain-down stations at five locations across Southwest Colorado. Specifically, crews will:

  • install lights and pull boxes;
  • pave graveled areas with asphalt; and
  • place a new electronic message board at a station in Ouray.

Work will enhance safety for truckers using these stations.

The five work locations are:

  1. US 50, Monarch Pass East/West, at mile point (MP) 190.1 in Saguache County;
  2. US 50, Monarch Pass East/West, at MP 201.9 in Chaffee County;
  3. US 160, Wolf Creek Pass, at MP 176.6 in Mineral County;
  4. US 550 Silverton and Ouray at MP 70 in San Juan County; and
  5. US 550 Silverton and Ouray at MP 95 in Ouray County.
