US 85 and Weld County Road 44 Interchange Newsletter

August 15, 2023 Update

Southbound US 85 ramps at County Road 44 are open

The southbound U.S. Highway 85 off-ramp and on-ramp at County Road 44 are now open. The new connections provide direct access to and from County Road 44 west of US 85. The southbound ramps intersect CR 44 at a new roundabout.

The roundabout is only partially open. Drivers will not have access to the new bridge over US 85 or northbound US 85. Extra caution is advised while drivers adjust to new traffic patterns.
The southbound US 85 off-ramp and on-ramp at CR 44 are now open. Construction continues on the east side of the highway.

New bridge over Union Pacific Railroad tracks under construction

Work is underway on the new bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks east of US 85. Crews are constructing bridge abutments after several weeks of installing steel supports that extend far below ground. Bridge girders are expected to be placed over the tracks in October. Working this close to the tracks requires continuous coordination with Union Pacific Railroad.
Steel supports were recently set for the new CR 44 bridge over UPRR.

Weekend traffic increase expected starting Sunday near Fritzler Farm Park

Fritzler Farm Park is located southwest of the US 85 work zone. New traffic patterns are in place this season. The park has released suggested routes to access the property on the Fritzler Farm Park website.

About the Project

Jalisco International was awarded a $28-million contract to construct an interchange at US 85 and CR 44 in Peckham. Work on the interchange started in early 2022.

The new interchange will improve safety, eliminate interaction between roadway traffic and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, and provide efficient access control.

Major project features include:

  • Two new bridges to carry CR 44 over US 85 and UPRR tracks
  • Roundabout at southbound US 85 ramps / CR 44 intersection
  • Intersection improvements at CR 44 and Niobrara Boulevard
  • Permanent closure of CR 33 at US 85 and UPRR

Traffic Impacts

Drivers should slow down as they approach the work zone, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles, and give themselves extra travel time.

Traffic impacts include:
  • General work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., extended hours and weekend work may be necessary.
  • Crews are working most Saturdays through September.
  • Lane closures on US 85 are possible on weekdays from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Expect trucks entering and exiting the work zone and intermittent flagger control on CR 44 for site access.
  • All work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.
