Felony DUI Outreach in the Latino Community

As part of the recent efforts to inform the state about the new felony DUI law, CDOT partnered with Spanish-speaking media to reach Spanish-dominant and Spanish-preferred residents with a message that is both culturally- and linguistically-relevant.

This media outreach included a live interview featuring bilingual trooper, Cpl. Ivan Alvarado of CSP, on KBNO’s “La Voz del Pueblo,” as well as an interview on Entravision’s “Despierta Colorado” segment. Likewise, public service announcements are running on both Telemundo and Univision stations serving the Denver and Colorado Springs market viewing areas. Cpl. Alvarado’s media visit prompted staff from various departments at the television station to approach him with questions about BACs, DUIs and impaired driving laws.

Cpl. Alvarado’s connection with the Spanish-speaking community is evident—many Spanish-dominant community members are often reluctant to interact with law enforcement, but Ivan is often approached with various traffic safety inquiries.
