CO 65 and CO 330 chip seal project begins in Mesa County

Travel Advisory

May 3, 2024 - Northwestern Colorado - 20-minute delays anticipated

Mesa County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner United Companies will begin a chip seal project on May 13 on Colorado Highway 65 and Colorado Highway 330. The work takes place on CO 65 from Mile Point 48 to MP 61.376 (the Interstate 70 Exit 49 interchange to 1.5 miles south of the Town of Mesa) and on CO 330 from MP 0-11.394 (the intersection of CO 330 and CO 65 to the Town of Collbran). Work includes a chip seal, fog coat and pavement markings.

The chip seal application will help protect and extend the life of the underlying pavement. The new surface will provide skid resistance and reduce the overall cracking of the pavement.

Ranchers in the area who may be trying to move their cattle within the project limits are encouraged to contact the project information hotline at 970-783-1554 to coordinate dates and times.

A pilot car will lead vehicles through the work zone. Pilot cars are specially marked so you can tell them apart from other construction vehicles.

The pilot car driver:

  • Will not start a pass through the work zone until it is safe to do so;
  • Knows which lanes to use;
  • Maintains a safe speed;
  • Coordinates with construction equipment and haul trucks;
  • Pulls off the road at the end of a work zone to allow traffic to continue on their way.

Traffic Impacts

  • Motorists should plan for one-lane alternating traffic guided by a pilot car and 20-minute delays.
  • Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Motorists should plan for delays and reduced speed limits through the work zone. It is imperative for motorists to drive the posted speed limit through the work zone and leave plenty of space between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them to avoid loose material from kicking up.
  • The anticipated completion date is mid-July 2024.
  • Travelers are urged to slow down, obey the posted lowered speed limit and avoid all distractions.
