Resurfacing project to begin on CO 112 from Del Norte to US 285 junction

Travel Advisory

May 8, 2025 - Southwestern Colorado - Motorists should plan for 15-minute delays

Rio Grande and Saguache Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with United Companies, will begin a resurfacing project on May 13 along Colorado Highway 112 from Del Norte to the US Highway 285 junction. Motorists should plan for 15-minute delays. The project has an anticipated completion date at the end of September.

“CO 112 is a busy highway for south-central Colorado travelers,” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Julie Constan. “Local commuters, as well as agriculture and freight drivers, use this as an efficient connector and rural bypass route when traveling through the San Luis Valley. The new resurfacing will make this valuable alternative route more reliable for Valley travelers.”

The project will improve approximately 13 miles of CO 112 in Del Norte from the US 160/CO 112 intersection, Mile Point 0, to the CO 112/US 285 junction at MP 13.2. Work will include milling the old asphalt surface, paving with a mixture of recycled and new asphalt (three applications) and bridge structure repair work. Additional work will include railroad track repairs and utility upgrades at the Rio Grande Bridge location.

In July, the project team will work in coordination with the Union Pacific Railroad for rail repairs and the City of Del Norte for utility repairs. The repairs will require a full week closure of CO 112 between CO 112/US 160 intersection and the Rio Grande River. Local traffic will be accommodated while all other traffic will detour through Monte Vista to US 285.

Project Benefits

The new asphalt will add years of life to the highway, provide a smoother road surface and will add durability by increasing the resistance of ruts and road damage. The new guardrail will be 31 inches high, designed to meet new safety standard requirements. The higher railing will help prevent vehicles from veering off the road more effectively, making the highway safer for the traveling public.

Traffic Impacts

For the duration of the project, crews will work full days, taking advantage of daylight hours. Construction activity will take place generally half an hour after sunrise and continue until half an hour before sunset. Traffic impacts will include:

  • One-lane alternating traffic and traffic delays up to 15 minutes should be expected
  • 10 feet width restriction
  • A speed reduction to 40 MPH
  • Travelers will encounter a 24/7 one-lane alternating traffic guided by a temporary portable traffic signal for bridge repair at MP 0.5, Rio Grande River
  • In July, there will be a full week closure of CO 112 between the CO 112/US 160 intersection and the Rio Grande River, with a detour through Monte Vista to US 285
