Safety improvements to begin on CO 12 near Weston

Project Annoucement

April 1, 2026 - Southeastern Colorado - Motorists should plan for up to 15-minute delays

Las Animas County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, United Companies, will begin a safety improvement project along Colorado Highway 12 west of Weston, starting in mid-April. Motorists should plan for up to 15-minute delays.

Safety improvements will take place along CO 12 west of Weston from Mile Point 46.7 to MP 48. Work will include a 16’ widening and full-depth reclamation and reconstruction of the highway. All layers of the roadway will be pulverized and reused in new hot mix asphalt paving. Other aspects of the project include 4’ shoulder widening and the construction of a 12’ eastbound passing lane. Crews will also perform culvert repairs, new pavement markings and signing.

“The Highway of Legends is a scenic and historic route known for its views, history and outdoor experiences between Trinidad and La Veta,” said Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “Construction of passing lanes will provide ample space and opportunities for vehicles to safely pass slower moving traffic.”

The new asphalt will add years of life to the highway, provide a smoother road surface and will add durability by increasing the resistance of ruts and road damage. The project is anticipated to be complete in September.
