CDOT begins region-wide bridge rehabilitation project in southeast Colorado

April 20, 2026 - Southeastern Colorado - Project begins April 27 on US 50 in Otero County

Custer, Huerfano, Otero and Pueblo Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with TLM Construction, will begin construction on the region-wide bridge rehabilitation project in southeast Colorado on April 27. This project spans across Pueblo, Custer, Otero, Las Animas and Huerfano counties on US Highway 50, US 350, Colorado Highway 10, CO 69, CO 96, CO 165 and CO 202.

Work consists of adding steel sister beams to the existing timber girders to strengthen the support of the bridge. The timber bridge project will enhance safety for the traveling public by reinforcing the aging bridges and adding longevity to existing bridges' lifespans. The project is scheduled for completion in December.

"The structural reinforcement of the beams will extend the lifespan of each bridge in this rehabilitation project," said Southeast Region Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. "These improvements will ensure the safety of the traveling public for years to come."

Traffic Imp�acts

Beginning on April 27, motorists and area residents can expect the following impacts:

Single-lane closures and shoulder closures
Narrowed lanes, 11-foot width restrictions and reduced shoulder
Reduced speeds in the work zone will be in place
Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday
Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change

Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
