Conflict warning systems installation project to begin in the Denver metro area
Project Announcement
Douglas & Jefferson Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner Sturgeon Electric will be starting work to install conflict warning systems at intersections in multiple locations in Douglas and Jefferson counties on Colorado Highway 74, Colorado Highway 83, and Colorado Highway 86 starting March 23.
Highway conflict warning systems use sensors and flashing lights and signs to alert drivers to potential collisions at dangerous intersections, especially those with poor sightlines or high crash rates. Installing these traffic warning systems will help to significantly reduce crashes in these rural areas.
Locations include:
- CO 83 and Gillian Avenue intersection between Mile Point 37 and MP 38
- CO 83 and Russellville Road intersection between MP 41 and MP 40
- CO 86 and the Deerfield Road intersection at MP 11
- CO 74 and Kerr Gulch intersection at MP 1
Work will begin at the Gillian Avenue and Russellville Road locations, and will then move to the Deerfield location next, followed by the Kerr Gulch. Work is expected to be complete early summer 2026.
Traffic Impacts
Motorists should expect the following impacts during normal working hours, which are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday:
- Single lane closures will be in place at the intersections of CO 83 and Gillian Avenue as well as CO 83 and Russellville Road
- Minimal delays are anticipated
- Shoulder closures will occur at the intersections of CO 86 and Deerfield Road and CO 74 and Kerr Gulch
- Speeds will be reduced through the work zones. Motorists are urged to drive with caution, heed all signs and leave plenty of following distance when traveling through the area
