Traffic flow improvement project to begin on northbound I-225

Project Announcement

Oct. 5, 2026 - Denver Metro/Central Colorado - Nighttime and daytime travel impacts expected throughout the fall

Denver and Arapahoe Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contractor, Brannan Sand and Gravel, will begin a project to ease congestion on northbound I-225 between I-25 and South Yosemite Street in early October.

The project will improve the bottleneck in that area by adding a through lane of travel to northbound I-225, which will ease congestion from merging traffic off I-25. The final configuration after construction will include four continuous lanes. Additional upgrades will include resurfacing and restriping northbound I-225 and improving the drainage infrastructure in the area. Construction is anticipated to continue into December.

Focusing on improvements to existing roadway infrastructure is an important tool to keep the region moving safely and efficiently. The $1.9 million project is anticipated to help reduce delays and travel time, allowing for easier merging and consistent driving speeds. The additional resurfacing work will offer a smoother and safer travel experience while drainage improvements will help to prevent flooding and protect the roadway infrastructure from weather-related events.

Travel Impacts

  • Crews will alternate between nighttime and daytime construction throughout the project
    • General nighttime hours will be from 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Sunday night through Thursday night
    • General daytime work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday
  • Motorists can expect daytime shoulder closures on northbound I-225 with all current through-lanes remaining open
  • Nighttime closures of the northbound and southbound I-25 off-ramps to northbound I-225 are expected intermittently. The two ramps will not close at the same time
  • During ramp closures, detour routes will be in effect
    • Northbound motorists on I-25 will continue north to East Hampden Avenue, to southbound I-25 to use the southbound I-225 exit
    • Southbound motorists on I-25 will continue south to East Belleview Avenue, to northbound I-25 to use the northbound I-225 exit.
  • Additional single- and double-lane closures on northbound I-225 may occur during nighttime hours only
  • The project team does not anticipate significant delays due to construction, however, motorists are encouraged to account for an extra 10 minutes of travel time
  • Slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and leave plenty of room between vehicles.
