CO 133 Culvert Repair in Bowie, CO

About the Project:

The Colorado Department of Transportation has secured a contractor, R.L. Wadsworth, for emergency repairs on a damaged section of Colorado Highway 133 north of Paonia. Crews will conduct emergency repairs where the road is currently closed at Mile Point 16.18 near Bowie, CO due to significant road damage due to a culvert failure. A key element in the repairs will be placing a temporary bridge. The temporary bridge will allow CO 133 to reopen to motorists. Permanent repairs to the damaged section of CO 133 are anticipated to begin once the temporary bridge is installed.

Project Benefits

  • Traffic will be able to access CO 133 which has been shut down since May 2 when the culvert under CO 133 at Bear Creek failed.

Work Schedule:

  • Emergency project workings hours will be seven days a week, Sunday - Saturday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Flaggers are present at the closure points on both sides of the culvert failure  to screen community members who need access to their properties. All other vehicles will be turned around if they don’t have the required credentials.

Traffic Impacts:

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

  • Travelers that are not residents in the area are encouraged to use COtrip.org for planning an alternate route around the area.
  • Motorists traveling to the Colorado Highway 82 (Roaring Fork Valley) or Interstate 70 can detour around the closure via US Highway 50 and I-70.
  • Once the temporary bridge is in place, Oversize/Overweight restrictions will remain in place. Those restrictions include: reduced speed limit to 40 mph, 85,000 lbs and 11’ width restriction.
