I-70 Noise Wall Replacement: I-76 to Pecos Street

About the Project:

The Colorado Department of Transportation and prime contractor, Hamon Infrastructure, will begin a noise wall replacement project on I-70 in March. Work will take place between I-76 and Pecos Street, extending between Denver and Jefferson Counties (Mile Marker 269.5 to MM 273). The project will remove the existing timber noise walls, which have degraded since their initial installation, and replace them with new concrete wall panels. Crews will also be replacing the interstate guardrails and barriers within this stretch. This project is the second of two phases, the first of which replaced the I-70 noise walls between Tennyson Street and Lowell Boulevard. Phase I was completed in August 2022.

Project Benefits

  • Reducing traffic related noise to adjacent homes and businesses along the corridor.
  • Providing additional safety benefits to the traveling public with the installation of new guardrails and barriers.
  • Improving the overall look of the highway for drivers to enjoy.

Work Schedule:

Different from the traffic impacts, this should be the general working hours and schedule of the project. Example:

  • The project is anticipated to begin early March and continue until September 2026.
  • General working hours will take place from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some nighttime operations may occur as needed throughout the duration of the project.
  • Crews will begin at Pecos Street on the north side of the project zone working west, and will transition mid-way to the south side of the project zone at I-76 working east.

Traffic Impacts:

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

  • Shoulder, single and double lane closures on east and westbound I-70.
  • Intermittent daytime full closures of West 48th Avenue North and West 48th Avenue South frontage roads will occur during installation of the new concrete wall panels. Detour routes will be in place during these times.
  • Possible ramp closures throughout the corridor for guardrail replacements.
  • Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal, with anticipated delays of up to 10 minutes.
  • Refer to COtrip.org for real-time travel conditions and road closures
  • Residents and businesses near I-70 can expect construction related noise during working hours.
