US 287 Safety Improvements from Ted's Place to the Wyoming Border

About the Project

The purpose of this project is to improve safety on US 287 between Ted’s Place and the Wyoming border, with a focus on reducing severe injuries and fatal accidents. This will be accomplished by:

• Implementing geometric improvements at intersections with crash histories
• Allowing safe passing areas to discourage passing in opposing lanes
• Providing additional shoulders to allow safe speed limit enforcement and keep stalled vehicles out of through lanes
• Providing milder side slopes to prevent rollovers
• Incorporating wildlife management measures to reduce wildlife/vehicle conflicts
• Evaluating the need for ITS, lighting and/or other non-roadway elements
• Fulfilling additional obligations agreed to under the INFRA grant

The project will also include resurfacing to improve surface condition and extend the functional life of the highway.

Tentative Construction Schedule

• Signing and striping improvements were made to the Owl Canyon Road intersection in 2025
• Improvements to the intersections at Red Mountain Road and Bonner Springs Ranch Road have begun and will be completed by the end of November 2026
• Additional improvements, including passing lanes, shoulder widenings, and wildlife fencing are planned for 2027-2028
