US 34 Timber Bridge Replacement East of Laird

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contracting partner, Lawrence Construction, will resume work on the US 34 timber bridge replacement and roadway improvements east of Laird near the Colorado-Nebraska state line on May 12, 2025.

The anticipated completion date is Summer 2025.

During the 2024 construction season, crews successfully removed two aging timber bridges and replaced them with two new concrete bridges. An off-site detour was implemented to divert traffic and minimize disruptions during the construction process. Concrete, known for its high compressive strength and durability, can support heavy loads while resisting weather-related deterioration, chemical damage and abrasion. Its longevity reduces the need for frequent maintenance, making it a reliable material for infrastructure projects.

Construction crews will complete paving and striping operations, as well as install new guardrails at both bridge locations. These additions, along with updated pavement markings and delineators, will enhance visual guidance and safety for motorists. Erosion control measures will be implemented to prevent soil from entering the waterway beneath the bridges, ensuring the long-term stability and environmental sustainability of the project.

Project Benefits

  • Concrete is known for its high compressive strength, making it capable of supporting heavy loads. It also has excellent durability, resisting deterioration from weather, chemicals, and abrasion over time. This longevity reduces the need for frequent maintenance and repairs compared to other materials.
  • New pavement markings and delineators will provide visual guidance to motorists. The installation of guardrails will increase motorist safety. In addition, erosion control measures will prevent eroded soil from entering the waterway under the bridge.

Work Schedule

  • Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Traffic Impacts Next Season

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

  • A speed reduction of 35 mph will be in place through the construction zone
  • A 12 feet width restriction and a 100 feet length restriction in place through the project area
  • Traffic will be guided by flaggers through alternating lane closures
  • Trucks entering and exiting construction zone
  • Refer to COtrip.org for real-time travel conditions and road closures
