US 40 Resurfacing in Empire

About the Project

The U.S. Highway Resurfacing Empire Project will consist of resurfacing both directions of US Highway 40 from the I-70/US 40 junction (Mile Point 258.3) to about one mile east of “Big Bend” and Berthoud Falls (MP 252).

This project includes:

• Replacing and cleaning inlets and culverts
• Fixing or replacing guardrails
• Signing
• Striping

Additional improvements within the town of Empire include:

• Replacing two traffic signals
• Upgrading crosswalks to improve safety
• Upgrading curb ramps
• Constructing bulb-outs
• Improving drainage

Project Benefits

• The project will improve the safety of pedestrians traveling along US 40 near Empire
• A smooth roadway greatly increases safety
• Drainage improvements will reduce the risk of hydroplaning

Work Schedule

Different from the traffic impacts, this should be the general working hours and schedule of the project. Example:

• Working hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• The project is expected to be completed in December 2025

Traffic Impacts

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

• Beginning in early May, there will be weekday single-lane closures on US 40 in both directions
• Work/closure hours:
  • Daytime work: Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Nighttime work
    • There may be occasional night work for pavement operations
    • Night work will take place Sunday evening through Friday morning from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • There won’t be lane closures during holidays and weekends
• The speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH through the work zone
• There will not be any height or width restrictions
