US 6 East of Holyoke Resurfacing

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation, in collaboration with contracting partner Simon began resurfacing a 13-mile stretch of US 6 from east of Holyoke to the Colorado-Nebraska state line in May 2025.

As a part of the resurfacing process, crews milled sections of the roadway to remove the top layer of pavement before repaving with hot-mix asphalt. Other areas were resurfaced by applying a new layer of asphalt over the existing pavement. This maintenance approach extends the roadway’s lifespan, reduces costs and minimizes disruptions to travelers compared with a full reconstruction. The new asphalt not only protects the underlying pavement structure but also improves the overall driving experience.

In-town milling and paving operations to improve US 6 (East Denver Street) were also completed in the City of Holyoke, along with additional roadway improvements, including new signage, striping, rumble strips and delineators.

Project Status: The project is nearing completion but will pause starting Oct. 13, 2025, with sign installation resuming later in the month. Installation work will continue into early November 2025. The road closure gate near County Road 41 will be installed once the gate material arrives.

Project Benefits

  • Preventative maintenance extends the lifespan of the roadway
  • Milling removes the worn-out surface layer, and the fresh asphalt overlay restores the road's smoothness and improves safety
  • Centerline rumble strips will alert drivers when they are unintentionally drifting out of their lane, preventing head-on collisions, sideswipes and other accidents caused by drifting into opposing traffic or off the road
  • Installing a road closure gate will safeguard motorists by restricting access to hazardous roads during severe weather conditions

Work Schedule

  • The project is expected to continue in late October through early November
  • When work resumes, the schedule will be Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change
