Project Update | US 6 Resurfacing project pauses for winter through spring 2027

About the Project

CDOT and contractor Harper Brothers Construction began a resurfacing, bridge replacement and roadway improvement project on US Highway 6 between Sterling and Atwood from Mile Point 398 to 405. The expected completion date is now October 2027.

During the 2026 construction season, crews replaced the concrete roadway on the eastbound lanes. In addition, new guardrail and permanent signs were installed. The eastbound US 6 bridge over Sterling Lateral No. 1, located north of County Road 24 and south of Sterling, was replaced along with its canal structure. Work on the Pawnee Creek Bridge included deck repairs and guardrail replacement.

CDOT identified issues with the placement and alignment of reinforcing steel within the concrete pavement. Corrective work is necessary to ensure the completed roadway meets CDOT’s standards for long-term durability and quality. CDOT and the contractor will work together over the winter months to determine the appropriate corrective actions.

The full corrective work required on portions of the eastbound US 6 lanes could not be completed before winter and will continue during the 2027 construction season. Before the shutdown, crews will address the condition of the existing westbound lanes and complete the work necessary to return traffic to its normal configuration for the winter.

The project is anticipated to resume in early spring 2027 to complete corrective work on the eastbound lanes and resurface the westbound lanes. In addition, the frontage roads adjacent to US 6 will be resurfaced. Following the Pawnee Creek bridge deck repairs and US 6 resurfacing work, crews will begin concrete paving operations on South Division Avenue. South Division Avenue will be fully closed between Park Street and Delmar Street. During the closure, crews will complete storm sewer upgrades and improve curbs, gutters, and sidewalks medians. The existing concrete-lined ditch will be removed and replaced with an underground pipe to improve drainage.

Final improvements along US 6 include the installation of new roadway signage and pavement markings, in addition to a new road-closure gate and LED Luminaire to enhance safety and visibility for all travelers.

Traffic Impacts

Motorists can anticipate the following impacts along US 6 between Sterling and Atwood (MP 398 to MP 405) during the period of construction:

  • November 2026 through spring 2027
    • Intermittent lane closures for roadway maintenance throughout winter shutdown
  • Head-to-head traffic configuration and traffic shifts with one lane of traffic in each direction
  • Access to county roads and driveways along US 6 may be limited during paving operations
  • A 12-foot width restriction will be in place, and vehicles wider than 12 feet should plan an alternate route
  • Watch for flaggers directing traffic
  • Speed limit reduced to 45 MPH
