US 6 & US 385 Bridge Replacements

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contracting partner, WW Clyde, will begin replacing five bridge structures located on US 6 and US 385 starting March 3. The anticipated completion date of the project is October 2026. The outdated bridges that will be replaced are located on US 6 and US 385, near Holyoke, in Phillips County, 13 miles west of the Colorado-Nebraska state line.

Bridge structures that will be replaced in 2025:

  • On US 6 east of County Road 37 (Mile Point 453)
  • On US 385 south of Colorado Highway 23 (MP 279)
  • On US 385 south of CR 4 (MP 291)

Bridge structures that will be replaced in 2026:

  • On US 6 west of CR 41 (MP 454)
  • On US 6 west of CR 43 (MP 455)

To maintain traffic flow during construction, shoo-fly detours will be built at each replacement site, allowing motorists to bypass active work zones. The detours will operate 24/7 and feature a two-lane traffic flow, except for structure A-27-AA on US 385 near MP 291. At this location, traffic will be reduced to a single lane with alternating travel guided by a traffic signal.

Project Benefits

  • Updated structures will have a lifespan of up to 100 years, minimizing the need for frequent maintenance and repairs
  • Replacing aging bridges will enhance safety for Colorado’s traveling public
  • Addresses challenges posed by deteriorating infrastructure, including bridges that may no longer meet modern safety standards

Traffic Impacts

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

  • US 385 at Mile Point 279 near Holyoke:
    • To maintain traffic flow during bridge construction, a 24/7 shoo-fly detour with two-lane traffic is in effect allowing motorists to bypass active construction sites
    • There will be a speed reduction of 25 MPH through the work area
  • US 385 at MP 291 north of Holyoke toward Julesburg:
    • Motorists can anticipate alternating lane closures guided by flaggers and short delays while crews prepare to construct the detour
    • There will be a speed reduction of 40 MPH through the work area
  • US 6 at MP 453 near County Road 37 west of Holyoke:
    • To maintain traffic flow during bridge construction, a 24/7 shoo-fly detour with two-lane traffic is in effect allowing motorists to bypass active construction sites
    • There will be a speed reduction of 35 MPH through the work area
  • Flaggers will be in place to guide traffic during working hours
  •  A 12-foot width restriction and 73.5-foot length restriction will be in place
  • Construction vehicles will be entering and exiting the work zones
