I-70 West Vail Pass Bridge – Two E/B Lanes Open over Thanksgiving Holiday

November 18, 2010 - HOLIDAY SUSPENSION OF WORK - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - EAGLE COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Kiewit Infrastructure Company began a bridge repair project on November 12 at the structure over Black Gore Creek on west Vail Pass.

The work, which is scheduled for completion by December 21, was contracted to Kiewit for approximately $300,000.

The project involves the replacement of steel bolts at the structure’s east-end, where the horizontal steel girders (support structures) are anchored to the bridge’s concrete abutment (where bridge meets land). New high-strength steel expansion anchors are being installed.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS - Eastbound I-70 at mile marker 182.5 is reduced to one lane—24/7—while crews place concrete barrier along the shoulder to stabilize the east end in preparation for the work. This outside lane closure is likely to be in place through the remainder of the project to enable safe staging of equipment. To accommodate Thanksgiving travel, the lane closure will be lifted from Tuesday, November 23, at 6 PM through Friday, November 26 at 6 AM. Crews need to continue progress immediately following the holiday to complete the project by December 21.

The public information line for the project is (303) 319-5857.
