Paving Operations on Colorado Boulevard Shutdown for the Winter, Signal and Intersection Improvements Continue
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will continue the traffic signal updates and the intersection improvements at 17th Avenue, Colfax Avenue and Montview Boulevard until the end of December 2010 as the work is not temperature dependent.
“In order to have a long-lasting, quality product, temperatures must be around 50 degrees and rising for paving operations,” said CDOT Project Engineer Kurt Kionka. “Due to the location of the project and the high traffic volumes, paving operations must take place at night in order to reduce the traffic impacts. Since temperatures are now too cold at night, paving operations have shutdown until the spring when warmer temperatures return.”
To date, crews have completed the median reconstruction and have paved two lanes of northbound and southbound Colorado Boulevard between Alameda Avenue and Colfax Avenue. When paving operations resume, crews will pave one lane of northbound and southbound Colorado Boulevard between Alameda Avenue and Colfax Avenue and all three lanes of northbound and southbound Colorado Boulevard between Colfax Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
In the meantime, traffic signal upgrades and intersection improvements will continue at three intersections and crews will finish placing Colorado Boulevard in its final alignment now that the median reconstruction is complete. For the next two months, motorists can expect various single lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional night work may be necessary which would require various double lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.
Delays are expected and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone”
Following the complete winter shutdown at the end of December 2010, work is expected to resume in April or May 2011, depending on weather. It is anticipated that the remainder of the work will take one to two months to complete with most of the work taking place during the overnight hours. Colorado Boulevard will remain in its normal configuration during the winter with no lane closures required between January 2011 and April/May 2011.
In all, the project will rotomill and pave 3.5 miles of Colorado Boulevard in asphalt; reconstruct the median and curb ramps; upgrade three traffic signals at 17th Avenue, Colfax Avenue and Montview Boulevard and improve turn lanes at those intersections.
LaFarge West, Inc. is the contractor of this $3.8 million project, which should be complete by the end of October 2010.
