Bridge Demolition and Girder Installation to Close Pierce Street and Wadsworth Boulevard This Weekend

January 7, 2011 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DENVER—This weekend, January 8th and 9th, weather permitting, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will demolish the eastbound US 285 bridge over Pierce Street and install bridge girders for a portion of the new US 285 bridge over Wadsworth Boulevard.

Both activities will require full closures of Pierce Street and Wadsworth Boulevard as well as some closures of US 285.

To complete the bridge demolition and girder installation, the following closures will take place on January 8th and 9th, weather permitting:

Pierce Street Bridge Demolition

  • All lanes of Pierce Street under US 285 will be completely closed from 6 a.m. on Saturday to 9 p.m. on Sunday.  However, crews will only conduct work from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day so the construction noise does not impact residents.  Pierce Street will remain closed overnight.  During the closure, detour routes will be in place:
    • Southbound Piece Street Detour: Motorists on southbound Pierce Street will take westbound Hampden Frontage Road to southbound Wadsworth Boulevard where they will return to eastbound on the West Hampden Frontage Road for access to Pierce Street.
    • Northbound Pierce Street Detour: Motorists on northbound Pierce Street will take westbound West Hampden Frontage Road to northbound Wadsworth Boulevard where they will return eastbound on West Girton Avenue and south on South Vance Street to Hampden Frontage Road for access to Pierce Street.

Wadsworth Boulevard Girder Installation

  • All lanes of northbound and southbound Wadsworth Boulevard under US 285 will be completely closed from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5:30 a.m. on Monday.  In addition, all lanes of westbound US 285 at Wadsworth Boulevard will be closed from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5:30 a.m. on Monday.  During the closure, detour routes will be in place.
    • Southbound Wadsworth Boulevard Detour Route: Motorists on southbound Wadsworth Boulevard will take westbound US 285 to Kipling Parkway where they will return to eastbound US 285 for access to Wadsworth Boulevard.
    • Northbound Wadsworth Boulevard Detour Route: Motorists on northbound Wadsworth Boulevard will take eastbound US 285 to Sheridan Boulevard where they will return to westbound US 285 for access to Wadsworth Boulevard.
    • Westbound US 285 Detour Route: Motorists on westbound US 285 will be detoured via the on and off-ramps at Wadsworth Boulevard.

Major delays are expected in the area over the weekend and alternate routes are strongly advised.  CDOT

would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”  Fines will be doubled for most infractions that occur in the work zone.

The girder installation and bridge demolition are part of a safety and mobility improvement project on US 285 between Federal Boulevard and Kipling Street.  The $40.1 million design-build project will reconstruct US 285 and replace three bridges among other improvements.

Concrete Express Inc. and Tsiouvaras, Simmons, and Holderness, Inc. is the design-build team for this project that will be completed by the end of July 2011.
