Bridge Expansion Joint Work to Close All Lanes of Southbound Parker Road Near Hampden Avenue on Saturday

March 30, 2011 Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 AURORA – On Saturday, April 2nd, weather permitting, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close all lanes of southbound Parker Road near Hampden Avenue for bridge expansion joint work. The full closure will be in place from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We are continuing our expansion joints repairs over the Cherry Creek Spillway, which requires us to remove the pavement across the entire bridge, conduct the repairs and pour new pavement,” said CDOT Project Engineer Alan Wagenknecht.  “Following this weekend’s work, we will begin the expansion joint repairs on northbound Parker Road over Vaughn Way and the Cherry Creek Spillway.  This will require daytime closures as well as some weekend closures.”

During the full closure of southbound Parker Road on Saturday, motorists will be detoured onto the ramp to Hampden Avenue where they can continue straight onto Parker Road. Uniformed traffic control will be in place to help move traffic through the detour route.

Despite a minimal detour, major delays are expected on Saturday and alternate routes are strongly advised.  CDOT would like to remind motorists to pay attention to the construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

The bridge work is part of a concrete rehabilitation and bridge repair project on Parker Road between Peoria Street and E-470.  The project will repair or replace approximately 760 concrete slabs along eight miles of Parker Road and repair the bridges over the Cherry Creek Spillway, Piney Creek and Vaughn Way.  The mechanically stabilized earth wall at the Nine Mile Park N Ride Station will also be repaired.

The expansion joint repairs are complete on northbound and southbound Parker Road over Piney Creek as well as southbound Parker Road over Vaughn Way.  The expansion joint work on southbound Parker Road over the Cherry Creek Spillway, which is near Hampden Avenue, will be complete following Saturday’s work.  Over the next month, crews will repair expansion joints on northbound Parker Road over Vaughn Way and the Cherry Creek Spillway.  Concrete repairs also continue in various locations along Parker Road between Peoria Street and Lehigh Avenue.

While the expansion joint work is underway, there will be several small bumps at both ends of the bridge that is being worked on and motorists should reduce their speeds.  These bumps are steel plates that are placed on the roadway during non-work hours so traffic can travel on the road.  The plates can then be easily removed when work resumes.  Once the expansion joint work is complete at a location, the bumps will be removed.

Hamon Contractors, Inc. is the contractor of this $2.3 million project, which should be complete by the end of July 2011.
