Glenwood Canyon Concrete Resurfacing Project Update
The area of the canyon where the work will take place stretches from the Grizzly Creek Rest Area (MP 121) to Hanging Lake Tunnel (MP 125). This project is the second in a series of phased projects that will replace the current asphalt pavement with more durable, longer-lasting concrete pavement. The work is expected to last until the end of June. The project was contracted to Lawson Construction of Loveland for $2.9 million.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS: This project will affect users of I-70 and access to recreational uses on the river as follows:
I-70 WORK ZONE TRAFFIC SWITCH (MP 118 – MP 125): During construction, there will be two-way (a single lane in each direction) traffic between No Name Tunnel (MP 118) and Hanging Lake Tunnel (MP 125) in the westbound lanes. The speed limit through the project area will be reduced to 40 mph and there is a width restriction of 12 feet. The eastbound lanes will be closed to traffic in the project area 24/7 to expedite the project’s completion in a safe and timely manner.
NO NAME REST AREA (EXIT 119): The I-70 westbound on- and off-ramps will remain open. There will be an exit at the No Name Tunnel traffic crossover that will allow No Name residents and local traffic to access the No Name area. The I-70 eastbound on-ramp will be closed to the public, but will be open to commercial rafters/guides needing access to Grizzly Creek Rest Area. Commuters and residents who need to access eastbound I-70 from No Name should travel westbound on I-70 to exit 116 (main Glenwood Springs exit) at which point they can access eastbound I-70.
GRIZZLY CREEK REST AREA (EXIT 121): Access to and from westbound I-70 at Grizzly Creek will be maintained. The eastbound off-ramp into Grizzly Creek will be open to commercial rafting/guiding companies throughout the entire project. Traveling public who need to access the Grizzly Creek Rest Area from eastbound I-70 will need to continue travelling eastbound to I-70 exit 125 (Hanging Lake Rest Area) and then travel westbound on I-70 back to the Grizzly Creek Rest Area at Exit 121.
SHOSHONE POWER PLANT (EXIT 123): The eastbound off-ramp into Shoshone will be open to the public only after completion of the entire project, which is anticipated to be June 30, 2011. The eastbound off-ramp is anticipated to be open to commercial rafting/guiding companies by May 27. I-70 ramps at the Shoshone exit will be closed to the public but will remain open to power plant employees only.
HANGING LAKE REST AREA (EXIT 125): Both the I-70 eastbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp at Hanging Lake Rest Area will remain open throughout construction.
GLENWOOD CANYON BIKE PATH: The path will remain open and unaffected.
