Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways to Offer Kid-Healthy Family Vacations in 2012

December 1, 2011 - Statewide Transportation Plan - DENVER – Five Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways have been selected to develop new kid-healthy packages for family travel.

The program targets families who are new to nature-based travel and who seek affordable weekend getaways.

Colorado’s participating byways include:

  1. West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway
  2. Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway Mountain Branch
  3. Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic and Historic Byway
  4. Highway of Legends Scenic and Historic Byway
  5. Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway

Byways were selected on their ability to offer outdoor recreation during all four seasons to youngsters in preschool, elementary and middle/high school. All five byways are poised to capitalize on national programs to get kids moving and in the outdoors, and to reduce childhood obesity.

This program will offer technical assistance to businesses located along the scenic byways. Workshops on creating kid-healthy menus will be offered by chefs, and lodging specialists will present ideas for motels, campgrounds and RV parks.  Retail specialists will educate local business on the opportunities presented by families and kids as customers.

Colorado has 25 Scenic and Historic Byways that are a part of a statewide partnership intended to provide recreational, educational, and economic benefits to Coloradans and visitors. Therefore, getting byways engaged in providing healthy family travel is important for both visitors and travel-related business in rural Colorado.
