CDOT Sets Barrier on US 550 South of Durango on Monday

February 26, 2016 - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - LA PLATA COUNTY - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) continues work to close off the inside northbound lane on US 550 south of Durango following the rockfall incident that occurred early on February 14.

Crews had moved the rock debris up against the rock face to further armor the hillside in preparation for more freeze/thaw conditions this spring. CDOT crews were transporting and moving some 700 feet of concrete barrier to close off the northbound inside lane, but the barrier has yet to be set in place.

On Monday, February 28, crews will remove the cones and set all the concrete barrier, closing off the inside lane until after spring run-off. Two lanes of travel will remain open along this three-lane section.

CDOT is now working with a rockfall contractor who has designed further mitigation for the area. Further information about the cost and scope of this work will be known and reported next week.

TRAVEL IMPACTS/ALTERNATE ROUTE:  On Monday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., motorists can expect single-lane, alternating travel as the barrier is set.
