Grand Avenue Bridge and Glenwood Canyon project impacts: I-70 exit 116 eastbound closure, daytime closure of canyon and I-70 night detour

March 3, 2016 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - Garfield County/Glenwood Springs - The Colorado Department of Transportation announces several closures impacting I-70 Glenwood Canyon and the Grand Avenue Bridge project.

I-70 Exit 116 Eastbound on-ramp and off-ramp closure

Beginning Friday, Mar. 4th from 10:00 a.m. until Monday, Mar. 7th at 6:00 a.m. the I-70 exit 116 eastbound on-ramp and I-70 exit 116 eastbound off-ramp will be closed. Motorists traveling eastbound wanting to access Glenwood Springs over the weekend will need to exit at the 114 (West Glenwood). This closure is required for the installation of a storm drain associated with the Grand Avenue Bridge project.

ALTERNATE ROUTE TO I-70 EB: Motorists traveling westbound on CO 82 can utilize the I-70 westbound on-ramp at exit 116 or US 6 westbound to exit 114 to reconnect to I-70 eastbound through the roundabouts.

Glenwood Canyon daytime closure

On Tuesday, Mar. 8 there will be a daytime closure from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. of Glenwood Canyon from exit 116 (Glenwood Springs) to exit 133 (Dotsero).  Crews are working to complete the rockfall mitigation fencing utilizing a helicopter and continued road repairs in an effort to move the traffic configuration into one-lane in each direction next week.

Safety closures of the Hanging Lake, Grizzly Creek and Shoshone rest areas remain in effect while traffic is in the head-to-head configuration. Bair Ranch (on the east side) and No Name (west side) rest areas will remain open. The Glenwood Canyon Bike Path remains closed as well. (Please note, local traffic coming from the west can travel as far as No Name; local traffic from the east can travel as far as Bair Ranch during this daytime closure.)

Updates will continue to be posted on CDOT’s traveler information site at www.cotrip.org and recorded on the 511 phone line.

I-70 Exit 116 6th Street Detour

The evening of Wednesday, Mar. 9th, I-70 at exit 116 will be detoured onto east 6th Street. Both eastbound and westbound lanes will be detoured beginning at 8:00 p.m. through 6:00 a.m. in a one-lane configuration in both directions. I-70 exit 116 will be open, although the evening of Mar. 9th will have periodic closures on CO 82 from 6th St. to 8th St. for the pedestrian bridge deconstruction.

“I-70 traffic will be detoured onto 6th St. through a temporary break in the I-70 barrier near Yampah Vapor Caves and will be rejoin I-70 at exit 116,” CDOT, Project Public Information Manager Tom Newland explains. “The detour is necessary for safety critical overhead work, as the contractor is removing a 108-foot section of the Glenwood Springs pedestrian bridge,” he said.
