I-25/Cimarron Design-Build Project Moves into Phase 1 of Construction

March 8, 2016 - Southeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 2 - Since the start of the Interstate-25/Cimarron Interchange reconstruction project last spring, work has largely taken place off line with minimal traffic impacts.

On Sunday, March 13, the $113 million design-build project moves into Phase 1 of construction with overnight lane restrictions taking place over the next several months on US 24 and I-25.

“Until the project is complete in late 2017, we recognize there will be traffic impacts and inconveniences,” said Project Director Dave Watt, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). “We appreciate the community’s patience throughout construction, because once complete, the interchange will be safer, accommodate higher volumes of traffic and will be aesthetically pleasing as a gateway into the downtown area and to the mountain communities to the west.”

Interstate lanes impacted and general times of restrictions on Sunday, March 13 include:

  • Eastbound and westbound US 24 (between 8th Street and I-25) – left lane restrictions from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Northbound and southbound I-25 (between Colorado Avenue and south Nevada/Tejon Street) - varying right and left lane restrictions from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The multi-modal improvements being accomplished as part of the project are integral to providing enhanced connections for pedestrians and bikers. “The project team continues to work collaboratively on improvements with the City and County Parks Departments, as well as with bike/running/trails users, stakeholders and community organizations,” said Watt.

All work is weather dependent and subject to change. Lane restriction times may fluctuate. For the most up-to-date information, sign up for weekly eAlerts by emailing .

  • Watch for future traffic eAlerts highlighting new alignments and anticipated lane restrictions
  • Watch for signage directing traffic through the project limits
  • Always be on high alert for construction traffic through the area
  • Stay out of designated construction zones

PROJECT INFORMATION: CDOT’s $113 million I-25/Cimarron Interchange Design-Build Project involves rebuilding the I-25 interchange between Colorado Avenue on the north and South Nevada Avenue to the south, 8th Street on the west and the Cimarron Street bridge over Fountain Creek on the east. Improvements will provide enhanced operations, correct existing safety and design deficiencies, and serve the anticipated short- and long-term area travel demands. When complete, this will be a highfunctioning interchange, safely handling more vehicles, enhancing multi-modal travel for those using I-25, US 24/Cimarron Street and the trail system along Monument and Fountain creeks. Substantial completion: fall 2017.
