I-70 east of Burlington will be reduced to one lane in each direction for eight months

March 10, 2016 - Northeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 4 - Bridge rehabilitation work starts Monday.

BURLINGTON – Starting Monday, motorists should expect a single-lane configuration along eastbound and westbound I-70 from Mile Points 441 to 449 through October. Temporary barrier wall will limit the width of the remaining travel lanes from east of Burlington to the Kansas border. No loads over 12 feet wide will be allowed to pass through the work zone. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph and fines doubled within the work zone for the next eight months.

Periodically, County Roads 53, 55, 57 and 59, which pass underneath I-70, will operate under flagger control at the bridge locations during work hours, which are daylight hours Monday through Friday. Some weekend or night work is possible. Only minimal delays on county roads, if any, are expected.

Each county road will be subject to a multi-day full-closure for concrete work. As the project progresses, closures will be communicated through weekly alerts using CDOT’s email alert service, as well as to local media and through variable message boards on affected roads. Signed detours will be posted. To sign up for alerts, visit the project website at www.codot.gov/projects/i70burlingtoneast.

Background:

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor partner, ABCO Contracting Company Inc., have begun a bridge rehabilitation project on I-70 east of Burlington. Eight structures will be repaired between MPs 441 and 449. This eight-mile project requires a continuous lane closure in each direction of I-70 for approximately eight months. Work is anticipated to be complete in fall 2016. All work is weather permitting and schedules are subject to change.

Rehabilitation work involves replacing concrete approach slabs and guardrail, performing deck repairs and repairing slope and ditch paving on I-70 bridges over county roads. These bridges were built in 1969 and the last major work on these structures took place more than 20 years ago. The approximate cost of the project is $3.5 million.
