Closures Along Westbound US 6 at I-70 in Golden Required for Emergency Bridge Repair

September 13, 2016 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close westbound US 6 at I-70 in Golden, routing one lane of traffic through the closure using the shoulder.

This closure is required to complete emergency repairs to the eastbound portion of the I-70 bridge over US 6. These closures will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and continue on Thursday, Sept. 15, from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Daytime work is required due to availability of materials and safety reason. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes if possible and delays should be expected.

On Sunday evening, Sept. 11, a semi truck carrying a track hoe crashed into the bridge structure causing significant damage. Due the damage, CDOT closed the right lane and shoulder of eastbound I-70 at US 6. In order to reopen these lanes, the closure on westbound US 6 is required to fix the damage.

"Unfortunately, bridge hits are not uncommon in the Denver metro area. Not only do they cause damage to our infrastructure, but also result in traffic impacts and delays to drivers using the interstate system to travel to work and home to their families," said Paul Jesaitis, CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director. "We urge drivers to always measure and weight check their loads to prevent situations like these."
