Two-Month Grand Avenue Bridge Paving Work Begins Week of April 17

GLENWOOD SPRINGS—Starting the week of April 17, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin asphalt overlay roadwork to prepare for the Aug. 14 traffic detour of the Grand Avenue Bridge. Three areas will be improved during this work:

  1. US Highway 6 from just west of Storm King Drive to the CO 82 intersection;
  2. Midland Avenue from Devereux Road to Eighth Street; and
  3. The downtown area

Beginning the week of April 17, crews will begin reconstructing the pedestrian ramps along US 6 and replacing guardrail. These construction activities are scheduled to continue through the end of April. The highway will then be milled and edge-paved at the beginning of May. The overlays for Midland Avenue and the downtown area are scheduled for June.

The entire scope of work is anticipated to be complete in June.

"Grand River Construction is our subcontractor for the overlay work," said Tom Newland, CDOT public information manager. "Our team realizes that this work is impactful, but necessary to prepare the city streets for the detour."

US Highway 6 Mill and Edge-fill

Five thousand, six hundred feet of guardrail, and 40 pedestrian ramps will be removed and improved through the end of the month. Crews will also construct two concrete crosswalks to accommodate pedestrian movements to RFTA bus stops on the route.

Crews are scheduled to begin the hot mix asphalt overlay on Monday, May 8. The overlay schedule is anticipated to span two weeks. US 6 will be in an alternating one-lane configuration during this time. Fifteen-minute delays are anticipated from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Crews are milling two inches of asphalt and edge-filling two inches of asphalt to prepare for the detour.

Midland Avenue Overlay

In June, crews will pave an inch and a half of asphalt on Midland Avenue from the intersection of Devereux Road to Eighth Street. Paving overlay operations are scheduled for one week. Midland Avenue will be in an alternating one-lane configuration during this time. Fifteen-minute delays are anticipated 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Downtown Mill and Fill

Crews are scheduled to begin a two-inch mill and fill in downtown Glenwood Springs in June. The affected streets are:

  • Eighth Street from School Street to Grand Avenue;
  • Colorado Avenue between Eighth and Ninth streets; and
  • Ninth Street between Colorado and Grand avenues.

Parking on Eighth Street, Colorado Avenue and Ninth Street will be closed during the paving operations. Each street will be in an alternating one-lane configuration as crews begin the overlay. The two-inch mill-and-fill operations are scheduled for one week.
