CDOT Begins US 24 Emergency Culvert Repair at Ruxton Avenue

Aug. 13, 2018 - Motorists Urged to Access Manitou Springs from East via US 24/Manitou Avenue Interchange

EL PASO COUNTY—This morning (Aug. 13), crews began demolishing a culvert at US Highway 24 (Manitou Avenue) and Ruxton Avenue in Manitou Springs—emergency repair work that was contracted to Wildcat Construction on Aug. 10.

On July 30t, crews closed Manitou Avenue between Ruxton and Park avenues following storms that damaged the west wall of the culvert under the roadway and caused a potential sinkhole. For traveler safety, crews will demolish the existing concrete structure and replace it with a 60-foot-long box culvert.

The work will be done primarily during daytime hours; however, some nighttime work will be necessary to expedite project completion. Manitou Avenue is expected to be reopened by the end of September, following the replacement of the culvert structure.

Manitou Avenue businesses are open and pedestrian access to the area also remains open.

Travel Impacts

  • Expect the full closure of Manitou Avenue at mile point 2.75, between Ruxton and Park avenues, until work is complete at the end of September.
  • Pedestrian access is open.
  • Motorists: Please access Manitou Avenue from the east by using the US 24/Manitou Avenue interchange or Sunshine Trail.
