I-25 Rockrimmon – Additional Work Extends Contract

Colorado Springs – The I-25 Rockrimmon Bridge Preventative Maintenance project is slightly under budget. This allows the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the contractor, Ralph L.Wadsworth, Inc. to extend the contract to February 28, 2019 to perform additional work of permanent repairs at the crescent-shaped crack located in the auxiliary lane of northbound I-25, south of the Rockrimmon Boulevard exit. This area was planned to have a temporary safety overlay of asphalt, but ongoing monitoring has identified that concrete panel replacement will provide a stable and permanent solution. The permanent fix will require a temporary auxiliary lane closure, but all through lanes and entrance and exit ramps will remain open during the daytime. Work in this area will begin in early January and will be complete by the end of February, 2019.

The project has successfully completed bridge maintenance, concrete panel replacement, drainage and safety improvements, and an asphalt overlay on all southbound and northbound lanes of I-25. The completion of this work has resulted in a smoother ride for all travel lanes in the current and ultimate configurations, with all "BUMP" signs removed from the site. On southbound I-25, the lane width and shoulder width restrictions have been removed and returned to 12 feet lanes and shoulders. Re-striping on northbound I-25, as well as removal of temporary concrete barrier from I-25, will be complete in January 2019, weather pending. Reduced speed limit will remain in effect until all temporary concrete barrier has been removed from the shoulders and full width lanes have been re-striped.

The majority of work will continue to take place Monday through Friday. However, some weekend work may be required to complete the project. There will be three I-25 travel lanes in each direction during the daytime throughout the duration of the project. The speed limit will continue to be reduced to 55 mph for the safety of the workers and the traveling public. Motorists should drive the posted speed, be cautious and attentive and avoid distractions. Intermittent lane closures may be required during night hours. Construction schedules are subject to change based on weather/unforeseen circumstances. Lane restriction times may fluctuate, so watch for weekly Travel Alerts with the most up-to-date information.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has initiated a bridge and driving surface preventative maintenance project on ten bare concrete bridges near the Interstate-25 Rockrimmon interchange that will improve safety and ride quality. This project is part of the ongoing CDOT Asset Management / Bridge Preventative Maintenance Program that began approximately ten years ago to extend the life of the state’s bridge structures to 75 years.
