Bridge Repairs Begin March 26 on I-70 Over the Colorado River

March 23, 2018 -

On Monday, March 26, CDOT will start repairing a bridge on westbound I-70 over the Colorado River, near De Beque. Work is expected to be complete in October 2018.

This 614-foot-long bridge was built in 1982. Required repairs include:

  • mitigation work to prevent cracks in the structural steel girders;
  • repairing the bridge's deck;
  • replacing bridge expansion joints;
  • replacing guardrail; and
  • building roadway crossovers.

Hamilton Construction is the contractor on this $3.4 million project.

Traffic Impacts

Work will be completed in three phases. During all phases, be prepared for traffic impacts, including lane closures, detours and temporary delays.

Phase 1

Week of March 26: Eastbound and westbound traffic will be placed in a single-lane configuration while the detour is set up. On Monday, eastbound traffic will be detoured to one lane as crews set up temporary striping and prepare the westbound lane for the detour.

Phase 2

Week of April 16: Westbound traffic will be switched and placed in the detour configuration while crews work on the bridge. This configuration will include single-lane traffic for both directions of I-70 from mile point (MP) 56 to MP 59.

Phase 3

Week of Aug. 27: Traffic will be switched to the right lane of westbound I-70, while crews remove temporary barriers, and work on paving, stripping and sign installation.
