Rockfall mitigation work on US 24 through Ute Pass Canyon
Travel Advisory
El Paso and Teller Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation will perform rockfall mitigation work along the eastbound lanes of US Highway 24 through Ute Pass Canyon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, June 16 through Wednesday, June 18, and Monday, June 23 through Wednesday, June 25.
Work will occur in the eastbound lanes of US 24 from mile point 293 to MP 298 through Ute Pass Canyon in El Paso County. Eastbound traffic will be diverted to the westbound left lane where motorists will encounter single lane, head-to-head traffic.
Traffic Impacts
On June 16 to 18 and June 23 to 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., motorists will encounter road work on eastbound US 24 through Ute Pass Canyon in El Paso County. Traffic impacts will include:
- Between MP 293 and MP 298 traffic can expect single lane, head-to-head traffic through the work zone.
Speeds will be reduced to 35 MPH through work zone. - Motorists should slow down as they approach the work zone, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles and give themselves extra travel time.

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.
- Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
- Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
- Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
- Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
- Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
- Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
- Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
- Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
- Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
- Be patient!
