New Colorado Scenic & Historic Byways Design Guidelines Adopted!
Exciting Program Milestone
CDOT is thrilled to announce that the Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways Commission formally adopted the new Colorado Scenic & Historic Byways Design Guidelines on November 5, 2025.
This document is more than a set of regulations; it is our shared strategic framework and vision for protecting the heart and soul of the state's 26 incredible journeys. As the first comprehensive design guidelines for Colorado's byways, this document establishes the governing standard for planning, designing, and managing these vital corridors.
A central principle of the guidelines is the Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) approach for all projects. This ensures that we collaboratively integrate safety and mobility improvements with the preservation of each byway's unique archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and scenic resources.
By championing these principles of stewardship, we ensure that Colorado's Scenic and Historic Byways remain vibrant, authentic treasures, fostering sustainable local economies and enriching the state's tourism appeal for generations to come.
